The Good
If you want to know my opinion about this game, refer to the Bad section. Here, I should just mention a few points.

There is one good character in the game, and that is the android girl Elise Triad (the one you see on the cover). Almost everything connected to this girl is acceptable, except one disgusting scene where the hero humiliates her in a such a way that I better not go into details (and bear in mind this still doesn't prevent you from getting the best ending!). Although the Do-robots-have-feelings? theme was already presented and discussed thousand times before, it is treated pretty nicely here.

Some of the decisions you make in the game actually make sense. At one point, you can choose whether to sleep with an innocent girl or not. Again, the scenes with Elise are one level above all the rest: at a certain point, you should tell you whether you consider her a machine, a work of art, or a real human being. This was easily the best place in the game - a faint glimpse of light in the midst of a very dark path.

The Bad
Critical Point is one of the worst games I have ever played, and undeniably the worst I have ever bought. Just the thought of forking over money for this product fills me with rage.

First of all, let me state this clearly: I'm not against hentai games, or any games with sexual content. On the contrary, I always welcome those themes in games, and would generally like to see more games dedicated to love in all its aspects. Kana - Little Sister, for example, is a wonderful tale full of genuine beauty, even though it is a hentai game with explicit sex scenes. I'm sure there are more good hentai games. But Critical Point is not one of them.

Tell me something: is it me, or do some of you also think sex and love are somehow connected to each other? Am I missing something in my life, or is it true that you can have a great sexual experience without necessarily humiliating each other in every way possible? Am I being utterly conservative, or is it really so that you don't need torture, rape, fetishes, chains, or whips in order to have good sex?

If you agree with me, then can you please tell me: why were all those things necessary in Critical Point? Why was there hardly one normal act of love in this game? Why was virtually every sex scene so utterly disgusting? How could they commit such a crime - turning the most beautiful and precious thing there is in life, love, into a dreadful nightmare full of perverted cruelty and indescribable ugliness! Do players really want to see such things in games?! Is there no alternative - either taboo on everything connected to physical love, or demonizing love by making it disgraceful? Being just a bad game is one thing (and Critical Point is a bad game, in addition to its repelling content), but why to be so disgustingly bad? Shame on you! Yes you, those who created this game - shame on you! Or should I rather pity you - your lives must be really full of sorrows, if your ideas of making love are like those found in this game!

As if the ugly sex scenes weren't enough, there are ugly murder scenes. The murders are disgusting beyond any imagination. The murder scenes in Phantasmagoria seem like innocent pictures compared to what you see here. No, the murders are not just horrifying. Horror can be beautiful, even the most bloody scene can attract if it contains creativity and artistic spirit. There is nothing of the sort in Critical Point, just indescribable disgust all over, pictures of the most perverted torture you can imagine - of course, with sexual overtones. Since sex is sin, a devil's tool to corrupt our souls, something we should be ashamed of, something that always comes together with torture and murder, right? I'm absolutely sure that puritan, hypocrite denial of physical love has the same origin as sexual sadism. Both see in sex something criminal, something forbidden, something sinful. Both deprive it of is essence, and both fail to connect it to love, care, and tenderness.

What about the story? I would forgive the game many of its flaws if it at least had a decent story. I expected a detective/sci-fi mystery along the lines of Eve Burst Error or Desire. In reality, the story of Critical Point is not even worthy to be mentioned in one breath with those two. There is no mystery in the game, just a series of murders that are explained with the most banal means possible to imagine. There is absolutely no suspense in the investigation, no development; the feeling Critical Point evokes in the player is not fear, it is disgust. The game is not scary, it is just ugly. The overall idea of the plot is downright stupid (women becoming horny because of sabotage/cyborg/alien invasion), there is no point whatsoever to them to participate in the story, and I won't be exaggerating by saying that Critical Point has hardly any story at all. Whatever is left from the supposedly grand investigation is a miserable excuse for a detective mystery. No plot twists, no psychology, no interesting ideas. I don't care who wrote this story: it is bad.

The character cast is almost as bad as the story. The appeal of good Japanese adventures lies in the fact it has a lot of conversations and characters who are presented from different sides. In Critical Point, the characters are nothing but primitive clich?s, reproductions of absurdly simplified types, usually connected to sexual activities. We have the utterly stupid Lolita character talking with an unbearable shrill voice; the s/m type, the double personality girl, the mature horny commander. The women in Critical Point are crude sketches drawn without any care; they are not real people, but unnatural sex toys in an adolescent imagination. The only good character is Elise, but this exception only confirms the rule.

There is no need to criticize Critical Point for being a digital novel. You sit in front of the computer screen, reading text and occasionally interfering to make the story flow in the direction you chose. Whether you like this concept or not, it was proven to work in many other games. The appeal of such gameplay lies in the idea of shaping your own adventure, moving the story along multiple paths. However, it is barely use in this game. Although it brags about having 25 or so different endings, Critical Point delivers nothing satisfying in this area, either. The 25 endings are a shameless lie: I don't know how many real endings the game has, but the countless ones I reached while playing the game were simply points of no return: the hero was killed in that manner or another, and you had to reload a saved game. Yes, you got to view extra scenes that were not available if you choose the correct path, but they were just a prelude to a premature end, rather than a full-fledged conclusion. Not to mention they were ugly, like most of the game.

What else? Graphics? The character graphics are terrible. The female characters look disproportional, their faces lack expression, their bodies are deformed and unattractive. In addition to that, the graphics are way too crisp and cheerful, everything is painted with crudely bright colors, both backgrounds and characters.

Critical Point is a bad game, bad in almost every aspect.
